Students creating clinically useful apps in the CDS App Challenge 2019
Multiple clinical specialties were covered by the clinical decision support apps created by students in the 2019 edition of the annual CDS App Challenge organized by Cambio CDS.
For the third consecutive year, the CDS App Challenge attracted enthusiastic eHealth talents who competed by creating stand-alone, standards-based clinical decision support (CDS) apps. The challenge finalists created apps in the clinical areas of Emergency Medicine, Hematology, Neonatology, Oncology and Medical Administration – all based on openEHR archetypes and Guideline Definition Language (GDL) version 2.
The finals event took place in Stockholm on February 19th when the four finalists presented their CDS Apps to an impressed audience, including members of an international expert jury of health informatics professionals. The apps were assessed based on criteria including, but not limited to, accuracy, clinical relevance, modelling design and complexity. Translation of an app to languages other than English yielded bonus points. The presentations were followed by an award ceremony where the finalists were awarded prizes for their accomplishments.
The result of the CDS App Challenge 2019:
1st place
– Holliday-Segar Fluid and Electrolyte Maintenance Formula [ENG/IND] by Winner Ng
2nd place
– ISTH Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) Score [ENG] by Rashmi Damodaran

The language code for each app is linked to an interactive app view where the app can be tested. The apps can also be found as part of the open-source common-clinical-models project at GitHub along with more than 200 other apps.
