Cambio Healthcare Systems announces Genomics Collaboration with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

Reading, Berkshire Dec 2, 2021 (  – Cambio Healthcare Systems today announced an extension to the collaboration with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT) to create a powerful platform for managing genomics activity.

GenOCEANIC (Genomics Open Core Engine Accelerating Northern Ireland Care) aims to make genomic medicine part of mainstream clinical care in Northern Ireland. Drawing in additional openEHR expertise from Future Perfect Healthcare, GenOCEANIC will streamline the triage process and improve patient outcomes through rapid diagnosis and the adoption of precision medicine.

With the built-in expertise of Cambio’s Clinical Decision Support (CDS) module, GenOCEANIC will provide geneticists with guidance on which panels are most appropriate to run, removing the need to rely on individual expertise and providing consistent quality of care across NI. GenOCEANIC has huge potential to benefit both patients and clinicians through reducing the diagnostic odyssey and powering wider research.

This initial phase with BHSCT will run for a further 18 months to identify any areas for further development. Based on open standards, the solution is designed to be built over overtime to meet the changing needs of the teams using it. In the new year, Cambio will also be beginning a six-month trial with Zetta Genomics, a pioneer in large-scale genomic data management.

‘The purpose of this collaboration between ourselves and BHSCT is to create an open platform for a sustainable end to end processing of genomics data for Northern Ireland, to repatriate genomics data that NI contributed to the UK 100,000 Genomes project, and facilitate the adoption of precision medicine.’ – Mark Thornton, Cambio Healthcare Systems.

‘We needed to create a system that would allow us to query the genome and work with it in a meaningful clinical way. Cambio was able to assemble the various system elements we were looking for, and then design a model that we could then run with, and use as an open standards base for future development. [In healthcare] we’ve inherited this notion that the current method is the gold standard, but it’s not, and we can do better.’ – Dr. Shane McKee, Consultant in Genetic and Genomic Medicine, BHSCT.
